Fellow artists frequently ask about my photographic methods when presenting works on the blog. I usually answer, "Shoot with digital camera, fine tune color/lighting in Photoshop to match the original, and you're ready to go."

Well...it's really not that easy. Many artists have a studio muse, gallery mascot, or several family art critics. My choice is the Creative Director...or I should say, the Creative Director chose me. I would like to introduce Jayson the Bluejay (I'm told he's really a California Scrub Jay, but I don't want to hurt his feelings). Jayson arrived on the art scene about two years ago, unemployed and flat broke. Resourceful personality that he is, he quickly convinced me that my photo skills were lacking, and I couldn't do it without him. We struck a deal...three peanuts per painting. He works hard to hone his craft, occasionally beating on the side of the house with his beak when I'm a slow pay.

I couldn't do it without him!

A peek at the new studio...

I'm often asked by fellow artists and collectors about my studio/working space. I work two days per week at my cute little studio/gallery space in Spanish Village Art Center #34A at Balboa Park, and three days per week at my "real" studio. Until last December, the "real" studio was an approx. 12' x 20' space in a commercial office complex, which was quiet and comfortable. This past month, with a little rearranging, I was able to upgrade to a little larger space and move my studio into my home. The new digs are approx. 18' x 22', with high ceilings and an entire wall of 10' tall north facing windows. Now I can paint next to the fireplace on cold and rainy days. This is a photo of my actual painting and working room, I also have a separate room with a large central table for framing, packing, and storage. It's a mess, so no photo of that :)

The end of December brought on a bit of much needed rain to Southern California. While rushing about with holiday errands, I spied these reflections on a rainsoaked sidewalk, as the glow of the winter sun again filled the sky.

Speaking of reflections, this is the time of year when I'm busily making plans for the year ahead, and also reflecting on the accomplishments of a year gone by. Have I told you lately how much I love to paint? Well, I love to paint so much that in 2011 I found the time to paint over 97 paintings! Along with Halloween, and some of the more common traditions of Fall, is the celebration season of "Dia de Muertos" or "Day of the Dead." I always chuckle at the raised eyebrows and averted glances when visitors to my studio encounter skulls and dancing skeletons in my artwork this time of year. Day of the Dead is an important traditional Mexican celebration that takes place every year on November 1st and 2nd. This celebration of dearly departed loved ones began over 500 years ago and was central to most ancient civilizations, with the Aztecs being the last and most famous. While the traditions are pre-Hispanic, the celebrations we now see are the result of a complex mixture of indigenous beliefs and practices and those imposed by Spanish Catholics. Catholics celebrate All Souls Day, which like all celebrations commemorating the dead happen during the dead time in autumn, after the harvests have come in. This coincidence of timing and belief, allowed Day of the Dead to survive the Spanish Conquest of Meso-Americans, and accounts for its continued existence in modern Mexican folklore. So...now that you know all that stuff...you need not be afraid :) Dancing skeletons, sugar skulls, and Marigolds are just a few of the embellishments you will commonly see depicted in this celebratory art work.

On a recent trip to Sonoma, I realized that this is not only a big wine producing area, it also boasts its share of local cheese boutiques. I couldn't resist stopping along side one of the grassy meadows to visit the sheep as they worked. Once I stepped over to the fence, this little "greeter" acknowledged my interest, and to my delight I realized that each of the sheep was wearing a hand crafted leather collar with a custom brass bell. Each of the bells was unique in size and shape, and as the 40 to 50 sheep wandered the meadow, one could hear all of the different bells tinkling. It sounded something like wind chimes, but more peaceful and beautiful.

Remembering scenes from Sonoma, I'm thinking of planting grape vines in my back yard. Grandma had grape vines with huge, dark purple grapes she called Muscats. Funny weather here in San Diego...first it feels like Summer...then it gets cold...today it feels like Fall. I recently spent a beautiful morning snapping photos in the "sunflower forest" of one of my collectors, Roberta H. This is my cute little studio in Spanish Village Art Center, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. This is where I love to spend my time ... not in front of the computer trying to wrestle with Facebook, Google, MySpace, Twitter, you name it.

I can't tell you how much time and energy went into creating my artist blog. It was many weeks of trial and error, going to the bookstore and looking for answers, and plenty of headaches. Finally, there is help available!

My husband and I were attending a car show in La Jolla a few months back and decided to play "tourists in our own town" for the weekend. We stayed at the La Jolla Cove Suites, with a room overlooking the Cove. Wow...what a trill for this "inland girl" to fall asleep listening to the sound of pounding surf on the rocks below. Early the next morning, we walked along the cliffs and enjoyed our city before the tourists were awake. This is a scene from the back side of the cove, with the cliffs in deep shade as the sun rose. While in Sonoma last month, I not only browsed some beautiful vineyards, I also stumbled upon an architectural design/garden center. The garden displays were so unique, I spent almost three hours just wandering about and snapping photos of the many interesting plants. One of the most unique settings was an entire vegetable garden built in raised planters with vertical rebar mesh fashioned into ten foot tall trellis structures. There were fabulous heirloom tomato towers, and this wonderful stand of artichokes that were the tallest I've ever seen. Veggies on steroids I was thinking...

Daily Painters "Summer Faces #3"

Hot off the easel, this piece was a request from a family I met at the La Jolla Festival of the Arts. Painted as a companion piece to Summer Faces #1 and #2, they plan on hanging all three pieces together instead of using just one large painting. Hopefully I can post a photo of the finished installation.

I've received several requests for large pastel paintings (24" x 36" and larger), but I've been suggesting the use of two or three framed pieces together to achieve the "grand" effect. I'm finding that I am physically unable to wrestle these jumbo pieces around, since glass and frame of that size can get pretty heavy, and pieces of this size are also difficult to transport and display at outdoor shows.

Typical sizes I offer are: 8" x 8", 12" x 12", 12" x 16", 11" x 17", 14" x 18", 16" x 20", and 18" x 24".

"Perch of Wisdom and Good Humor"

Whew...it's taken an entire day to recover from my weekend at the La Jolla Festival of the Arts. Pictured above is my "Perch of Wisdom and Good Humor." I'm jokingly calling it that, since I've never answered so many unique questions about my art. Questions from other artists, casual observers, art critics, and eager collectors had me on my toes all weekend. I figured it would be fun to share a few of the more creative comments here:

"Look Johnny, these are just like your cray pas drawings on the refrigerator at home..."
"If these are like chalk, why don't they smear?" (as she vigorously rubbed her hands over the glass)
"Aren't these toxic...did you take vaccinations to work with pastels?"
"I've never hear the first name M., what nationality is that?" (referring to my signature M. Straub)
"These paintings are great...are you a little...you know...?
"I love them...I'll take three!" (and this was my favorite :)

So you see, the life of an artist isn't always solitary and boring. You never know what may be coming next.

Since I grew up with "the birds", it always catches me by surprise when tourists show such excitement over their pointed plumes. They remind me that I'll be spending this beautiful Memorial Day weekend in the garden, probably tending their masses. Mission Federal ArtWalk

It was another wild weekend at the Mission Federal ArtWalk in Little Italy. The crowds were enjoying beautiful weather, great music and lots of good food...oh, and a wide variety of original art too! Hanging, wrapping, and standing 10 hours a day, two days in a row had my feet, knees and back calling for a time out, but as always, I'm already signed up and looking forward to next year.

Colorful and lively, flower arrangements always get my attention. This perky bunch of tulips is the pick of the day. Although it may be a bit difficult to see in this photo, I had fun with a bit of sparkly copper texture in the underpainting on this piece. That "salmony" pink results from the scenes still etched in my mind from a recent weekend at "Viva Las Vegas"!

Another recent farmer's market find, Persimmons not only make great artist props, they also make for a fun and colorful table decoration. Not being much of a "Suzie Homemaker," I have no idea what to do with them other than stack them in a pretty bowl and enjoy looking at their warm colors. Works for me :)

Walking across the bridge at Mission Center Road one morning, I spied this beautiful reflection while looking west up the San Diego River. It's not often that we have such sharp, puffy, white clouds overhead. That little voice in my head said, "That's a painting." And so it is.

Since it's always fun to have something special in my booth at ArtWalk, here is my idea for this year. There's just something about the movement of Poppies that I can't get enough of. When working in pastel and framing with glass, the pieces can get pretty heavy as the size increases. My solution for big walls and big spaces is to hang two or three companion paintings.

I'm revisiting a favorite scene today. I often take a morning walk when I'm at my studio in Balboa Park, and this is my choice for one of the most beautiful areas in the park. For you locals, it is located along President's Way near the gymnasium building. I think these are Podocarpus trees, and this time of year they are sprouting with brilliant green new growth.

Daily Painters "Where's the Pasta?"

Shopping at my local Trader Joe's is always a fun adventure. The smell of the fresh flowers and the colors of the seasonal fruits and veggies always get the creative wheels turning. Knowing there would be spring fresh produce in abudance, I found a reason for an early morning visit. Well, if you've ever been to a Trader Joe's, you know what I'm describing when I tell you the aisles are more than a little cramped. Now with that in mind, picture me blocking traffic with camera in hand, fondling the tomatoes into just the perfect pose...with the store manager hot on my tail. In my defense, I did buy all of the tomatoes I touched, and quickly headed toward the check-out stand...now, to find the pasta.

Since my "brick and mortar" gallery is located in a tourist area of San Diego, I frequently paint local landscapes. This is one of my favorite trails along Torrey Pines State Park. I'm particularly drawn to the shapes of the windblown trees and shrubs in this area. They look very "Dr. Seuss" to me.

I'm back to the Nopales...cactus that is...and the winter rains have washed their paddles to a bright shine. Little weed heads dancing in the wind, begging for my attention, and sure to lead to prickled fingers. I'll let them dance for another day...

I began counting my creations as a New Year challenge, this is painting #20. I'm often asked if I really paint an entire painting each day. The answer is no...but I do go to my studio and paint for four to six hours every day, and sometimes a few at a time spring forth. Yes, the sky this morning was almost on fire. It was the first crystal clear sunrise of the week, and I found myself out in the chilly morning air snapping photos in the succulent garden. My usual time in the garden would have the light high overhead, but the backlighting of the sunrise was spectacular, so I thought I would share.

Painting daily sometimes gets my ideas flowing so fast that it's hard to keep up. Usually, I arrive at the studio in the morning with no idea what the day will bring. I thumb through a big box of reference photos I've taken on my travels, and one thing or another will jump out to be painted. But on this day, before I could even get into the studio, this group of oak trees worked their way into my early morning dreams. Do you dream in color? Art Festival Booth Set-Up

9-panel "Propanels" display

I'm frequently asked by my artist friends about setting up at indoor and outdoor art festivals, and with the Mission Federal ArtWalk 2011 just around the corner this April, I figured I would pass along a little info.

Over the past seven years, when showing at art festivals like ArtWalk, I've relied on various methods to display my work. Most included metal straps (used like gallery rods) that were easy to store, transport, and install. Last year I decided to take the plunge and purchase one half of a "professional" display. After much investigation and price comparison, I found that Propanels was the most to my liking. With six panels, I was able to set up a nice side and back wall display at last years Artwalk. (you can see that if you scroll down the right side of the screen to "Artwalk Featured Artist 2010")

The recent purchase of an additional three panels allows for a full booth display. The photo above shows my full booth display at the San Diego Holiday Arts Festival this past November. That white gap in the back wall is actually where I've brought the far left back panel forward to create a storage/wrapping station behind the panel. I can tell you that set up is easy, since the panels are light weight and stack flat for transport. Heavy paintings are easily hung from rod hangers attached to the tops of the panels, and smaller pieces are easy to hang from drapery hooks secured on the panels. They may seem a bit pricey, but well worth the investment if you are showing on the road. I've included a link to their site here. Feel free to drop me an email if I can answer any other questions.

Daily Painters "Blushing Nopales"

Another beautiful day in San Diego, another fun day in the garden. Today we meet the succulents, and in particular, the blushing pink paddle cactus. Botanically known as "Opuntia Microdasys", these are the "nopale" cactus of Old Mexico. They were commonly peeled, boiled, chopped and used for salsa...yum! A cute upright addition to the succulent dish garden, as long as you keep your fingers in check, they're pretty friendly.
