It's that pink again...it has worked its way into another painting! With all things Spring happening everywhere lately, my color palette has definitely taken a turn. The cold, crisp evenings and clear forever skies of November provide some of the most beautiful sunsets here in San Diego. A stunning backdrop for the shadows of palms rustling in the breeze. The historic Hotel Del Coronado is always a favorite destination for John and I between the end of November and the beginning of December. We love to sit in the lounge and snack, enjoying the idea that we can be tourists in our own town!

Skyscapes are a favorite subject of mine, and this view of the sunset over Pt. Loma was a fun project. The setting sun bounces off the water in so many different combinations of color, contrast and mood! I've painted this scene in pastel before, depicting different times of day and weather conditions. This is the first representation in oil on canvas, with I'm sure many more to come.

With summer coming to a close, and the cool evening breezes of fall just around the corner, the colorful sunsets are very special this time of year. The warm hues give way to the cool grays of fog drifting over Pt. Loma, and the ocean takes on a very glassy, mirror like glow. I've really been enjoying the change of season in my new studio here at Liberty Station. The coastal weather is such a change from the inland clear that I usually see.

I woke to a blazing pink sunrise this morning, and now only eight hours later, the National Weather Service has issued a storm warning. We're gearing up for high winds and rain overnight, after two summerlike days in a row. Weird weather here in San Diego. Now where did I stash that umbrella...?

I'm revisiting one of my favorite scenes today. The last glimpse of sunlight as it disappears beneath an incoming blanket of fog. The inspiration for this piece was a sunset photo I took along the Sunset Cliffs area of San Diego. Seems funny that I only live about 14 miles from the beach, but I rarely go there. I must add that to my "To Do" list. This piece was difficult to photograph, and is really more striking in person. I used metallic pastel in the water and cloud areas, really pretty!

A popular subject for many local artists, La Jolla Cove is always on the "must see" list for tourists. This beautiful location always presents a new painting opportunity.
